West Di Lido Residence

Located on an artificial island within Biscayne Bay, the West Di Lido Residence continues to address the notions of regional modernism explored by Florida’s mid-century architects. Specifically, the house shares attributes of Miami architect Alfred Browning Parker’s design for his house on Royal Road in Coconut Grove. In both designs, the horizontal slabs of the roof and second floor structure are strongly expressed. Persianas (floor-to-ceiling louvered doors) open to the balconies and provide a continuous flow from interior to exterior spaces. This horizontal expression occurs in both the waterfront wing and the street-side wing and flanks a central garden courtyard. A layer of thin, vertical steel columns offer additional clarity to the structural design.
