This beach house on an ‘out-island’ of The Bahamas represents the expression of “variety, freedom, expansiveness and love of the physical world” which the architect and educator Harwell Hamilton Harris described in his 1954 lecture on regionalism. The Elbow Cay Residence is not beholden unto strict historic guidelines nor does it attempt to simply replicate Caribbean architectural typologies. Instead, it draws upon the characteristics of the architecture that came before it and uses those attributes as an abstract guide. Regional modernism does not have a notable track record in The Bahamas, however, Elbow Cay Residence certainly exemplifies the synthesis of continuity, tradition and optimism which are the hallmarks of the regional approach. The resultant design inextricably and pleasantly connects its inhabitants with the tropical environment of this island nation. As such, a strong emphasis was placed on maximizing the experience for its inhabitants. Cross-ventilation and sea-to-sea views dominate the design while an exclusive master suite with private rooftop terrace and garden occupies the upper level of the main home. The property will also contain a separate guest residence on the shallow sea side of the property with boat dock access.
